Largely the X470 seems to be a slightly revised version of the X370 chipset. As we saw on the ASUS Crosshair the Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 7 follows a similar path of being very similar to a the X370 – barely a year old – with a few additional features to keep it cresting the wave of the leading edge of technology.

AMD’s Ryzen 7 2700X is another big step forward for AMD. The improved boost algorithms add to Ryzen’s performance advantage in heavily-threaded applications, while the increased frequency and reduced memory latency provide a boost to a wide range of workloads. AMD delivered on the pricing front, too, and the bundled LED cooler and storage tiering software adds to the value.

The Gaming 7 Wifi is one of three new Aorus X470 boards with others being Gaming 5 Wifi and Ultra Gaming. The 7 stands alone in terms of electrical specification as it has a 10+2-phase digital CPU power supply while the cheaper pair make do with 8+3.

With 2017 finished, and Ryzen being very successful for AMD, the inevitable question was due: what happens next? Early in 2018, the plans were laid bare: a second generation Ryzen processor was set to come in mid-year, followed by a second generation Threadripper, using GlobalFoundries’ 12nm process. This is not AMD’s next big microarchitecture, which we know is called Zen 2 on 7nm, but an opportunity to launch a wave of components with minor improvements and take advantage of a manufacturing process that gives more frequency and more performance.

The X299 Extreme4 is a fine value for, say, pairing a PCIe x16 four-way M.2 adapter with a single graphics card. The price could also entice prosumers seeking to go from a six-core to an eight-core CPU. But the board’s restrictive slot configuration limits its appeal to niche cases.

The MSI X370 XPower Gaming Titanium is marketed as a top of the range ATX offering and currently stands as MSI’s flagship AM4 socket motherboard. The XPower branding over the years has been heavily associated with overclocking and enthusiast level performance, but due to a change in the direction MSI in terms of marketing, the XPowerbranding now correlates with gaming as well.
