ASUS ROG ZENITH EXTREME ALPHA

Being at the top of the X399 price stack, Asus has to deliver on all fronts with its Extreme Alpha, and the company succeeds. Serious overclockers and builders with deep pockets can find value in this board compared to other current-generation product offerings. The rest of us should stick look for something (much) more affordable.

ASUS ROG ZENITH EXTREME ALPHA

As a refresh to their HEDT product lineup, the ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha became ASUS’s flagship X399 series motherboard. The motherboard has a lot in common with ASUS’s ROG Zenith Extreme, the most high-end X399 motherboard for the Ryzen Threadripper lineup at the time of launch but the Alpha takes the design methodology of the original a notch ahead.

This board is no joke, while the “Alpha” name may seem a bit extreme or silly, it really is the new alpha in my opinion for anyone looking at Threadripper. The new Zenith features a VRM so large it takes up the entirety of the top of the board going from basically end to end with VRM components.

ASUS ROG ZENITH EXTREME ALPHA

ASUS put seven fan headers on the motherboard, all of them are hybrid DC/PWM mode fans, one is occupied by the heat sink fans. The orange and blue fan headers are all rated 1A, but the blue share controls. The red and yellow headers offer 3A, but the yellow headers run full speed by default.

The price is the same as before at £520, but this is still considerably higher than both the aforementioned MSI and Gigabyte boards, which sit at £470 and £430 respectively and offer similar feature sets. The power circuitry is key when dealing with HEDT CPUs, especially the likes of the 2990WX, and Asus claims there are space issues on X399 when trying to properly design for overclocked flagship Threadripper.
