AMD EPYC 7742

Sixty-four cores. Each core with an improved Zen 2 core, offering ~15% better IPC performance than Naples (as tested in our consumer CPU review), and doubled AVX2/FP performance. The chip has a total of 256 MB of L3 cache, and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes. AMD’s second generation EPYC, in this case the EPYC 7742, is a behemoth.

GIGABYTE X570 GAMING X

The obvious aesthetic tweaks, though, are the addition of an I/O shroud and one M.2 heatsink – welcome if you’re not too enamoured of the hefty copper heatsink on SSDs such as the Aorus PCIe 4.0 sample we use for testing. However, with this sandwiched between the GPU and CPU socket, the stock configuration saw an M.2 temperature of over 70°C, which is worse than using the included heatsink with our SSD.

ASRock X570 Taichi

ASUS ROG ZENITH EXTREME ALPHA

Being at the top of the X399 price stack, Asus has to deliver on all fronts with its Extreme Alpha, and the company succeeds. Serious overclockers and builders with deep pockets can find value in this board compared to other current-generation product offerings. The rest of us should stick look for something (much) more affordable.
