This motherboard is intended for use with 12th generation Intel Alder Lake-S processors. Indeed, we are here on a new LGA 1700 socket and only this generation is compatible. Thus, we can for example place an i9-12900K , i7-12700K or even the i5-12600K to quote the references with unlocked coefficient, but this motherboard will be more suitable for non-K CPUs like the i5-12400or why not the i9-12900. Starting with the motherboards, as usual MSI’s been on their game by quickly sending over the MAG B660M Mortar WiFi DDR4 and as it stands this is the only B660 board we have for testing, so we’re happy to have it. The rest of Intel‘s partners seem to have gotten into the holiday spirit, forgetting that this launch is happening. But no matter, the B660M Mortar WiFi DDR4 is a great starting point and is ideal for showing off the new Core i7-12700.

For MSI, the MAG B660M Mortar is a well-made solution that sports enough connectivity between USB 2.0 and USB 3.2 for most consumers to be happy. I do like that 2.5Gbe has stayed on as a platform feature with B660 and enjoy that MSI has added Wi-Fi even if it’s the older Wi-Fi 6 standard and not 6e.

MSI equips the B660M Mortar with two PCIe x16 (one Gen 4 the other Gen 3) slots and a single PCIe Gen 4 x1 slot. There are two M.2 slots, both of which have a thermal heat sink finished in the same brushed silver as the rest of the motherboard. The PCH heatsink is coated in the silver palette and embossed with the ‘Mortar’ trademark. Additionally, the board features six SATA III ports. The rear panel connectors include three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Sort-A ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, HDMI, Display-Port, a 2.5G Ethernet port, two WiFi6E antennae, and a seven-channel audio jack array.
