GIGABYTE X299 AORUS GAMING 3

There’s plenty to choose from as far as X299 motherboards go if you’re keen on netting an Intel Skylake-X CPU, and having covered options from Asus and MSI, it’s now Gigabyte’s turn to pitch itself against our battery of tests. We’ve received the company’s sub £300 offering, the £270 X299 Aorus Gaming 3 to be precise.

MSI X299 SLI PLUS

We’ve finally got round to looking at one of MSI’s shiny new X299 motherboards, and sitting sweetly on our test bench currently is the X299 SLI Plus, which is a more budget-focussed motherboard compared to others in MSI’s X299 arsenal, retailing for around £260.

ASUS PRIME X299-DELUXE

ASUS’s PRIME X299-DELUXE is currently ASUS’s top of the line X299 motherboard, and the second most expensive you can buy at this point. ASUS’s Deluxe lineup of motherboards has a long-standing tradition of being quite hardcore in the way of features and quality. MSI X370 XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM

Honestly, it’s what I have come to expect from MSI on its upper tier boards. You get Steel Armor protection on the DIMM, PCIe, and U2 slots that offer EFI protection, as well as a more robust retention mechanism to the PCB. On top of that we see Military Class 5 VRM components, Click BIOS 5, and so very much more. Let’s dig in and see what MSI has brought to the table.

Intel Core i7-7740X

The Core i7-7740X brings some of the best features of the Kaby Lake microarchitecture to the HEDT platform, but you lose the integrated GPU in the process. The restricted PCIe and memory features hamstring the X299 platform, but you still pay for features you cannot use. Until Kaby Lake-X-specific motherboards come to market, it’s best to either upgrade your GPU or take the full step up to a true HEDT processor.

We’re taking a slightly different slant upon the usual review formula today, which will become clear as we move through.

MSI X299 GAMING PRO CARBON AC

MSI’s X299 GAMING PRO CARBON AC is second from the top when it comes to MSI’s X299 motherboard lineup. The motherboard offers a very strong feature set, and a new level of customizability. The motherboard does not only have RGB LEDs built into the top and bottom of the PCB, but it has RGB LED headers and the ability to change the physical color of the heat sinks and shields.

ASRock X299 Taichi

The X299 Taichi’s CPU-fed M.2 slot is likely the biggest competitive advantage of the three LGA 2066 motherboards tested thus far. Though the way its extra M.2 slot is connected precludes SLI when used with Kaby Lake-X, the X299 Taichi is cheap enough to offset the cost of a Skylake-X CPU upgrade.
