GIGABYTE’s X299 AORUS Gaming 7 is GIGABYTE’s second most expensive X299 motherboard on the market, but it’s also $100 cheaper than their top of the line X299 AORUS Gaming 9. Intel’s direction for the high-end desktop space has taken an interesting turn. After several years of iterative updates, slowly increasing core counts and increasing IPC, we have gotten used to being at least one generation of microarchitecture behind the mainstream consumer processor families. Had the X299 Aorus Gaming 7 included a Thunderbolt 3 controller, it would have easily won a higher award. Were we more concerned with energy efficiency, the X299 Aorus Gaming 7 wouldn’t have won any award. The X299 Aorus Gaming 7’s upscale components are probably worth the extra money for many buyers.

With the release of the X299 chipset it was only a matter of time before the designers at ASUS returned to this theme and the X299 TUF Mark 1 is the result. We’re not sure if the Mark 1 part of the name indicates a aesthetic consideration for this particular model, or whether it is the beginning of a long line of motherboards with the TUF moniker rather than the Sabertooth one.

Our first ASRock X299 motherboard review is here, and today we will look at the X299 Taichi. The Taichi brand has been one ASRock has offered since they launched their X99 Taichi last year. The whole concept of the Taichi is balance and in this case a balance of price and features. The motherboards have always been solid, but never over the top or of lower quality than one might expect from a high-end motherboard.
