In this review we will focus on the X299 Extreme4 motherboard which is designed for the Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X processors. All tests will be performed on the i9-7900X processor as I don’t think that many users wish to buy 4 core processors for a high-end desktop platform when 6 core Coffee Lake processors cost not much more.

ASRock Fatal1ty H370 Performance

Intel’s new H370 chipset targets a more mainstream segment than Z370 sacrificing CPU overclocking ability, among other things, in return for a lower price. Motherboard vendors are therefore able to bring to market gaming-oriented products, like this ASRock Fatal1ty H370 Performance, with lower price points than Z370 equivalents.

ASRock X299M Extreme4

With support for the entire Intel X-Series 2066 processor range, it’s obviously built for the enthusiast market. For those building extreme gaming systems or a workstation, it has a lot to offer. It will support multiple GPUs, blazing fast M.2 storage, 4266+ (OC) DDR4 memory, and much more. Of course, added perks like the XXL Aluminium Alloy Heatsink design, RGB lighting and Realtek ALC1220 audio are very welcome additions also.

ASRock X299 Taichi XE

This includes some extremely robust power delivery, and their fantastic XXL heatsink design to sort those pesky VRM issues out quickly enough. If that’s not enough, four full-size PCIe slots, 10 SATA ports, 3 M.2, and a freaking boatload of USB headers, networking options, and high-end audio. In short, if you need something, it’s here and then some.

ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate

This is a serious motherboard with some pretty hardcore features and design choices that are sure to light a fire under any enthusiast system builder. ASRock X299 Extreme4

The X299 Extreme4 is a fine value for, say, pairing a PCIe x16 four-way M.2 adapter with a single graphics card. The price could also entice prosumers seeking to go from a six-core to an eight-core CPU. But the board’s restrictive slot configuration limits its appeal to niche cases.

ASRock X399 Taichi

The choice fell on an ASRock X399 Taichi. On the one hand, the purchase price tends towards the lower end of the price range of Threadripper motherboards and, on the other hand, ASRock has built a good reputation on Intel with the Taichi series in terms of price / performance and overclocking suitability.
