To make sure it won’t be boring until the next Intel Rocket Lake generation, we looked at an alternative to the numerously tested Intel Core i5, i7 and i9 on OCinside.de today. We are talking about the Intel Xeon W-1290 processor, which is almost the professional counterpart to an Intel Core i9-10900. As platform we have chosen the brand new ASRock W480 Creator LGA1200 high-end motherboard with W480 chipset. If the Intel Xeon can convince and if it is even suitable for gaming, we show in the following review.

Upcoming Intel Chips Allow Overclocking on Budget Motherboards

Intel will begin supporting overclocking on mid-range motherboards with Rocket Lake, the company has confirmed to us today. Previously limited to enthusiast motherboards with a high-end chipset, such as the existing Z490 chipset for 10th Gen Comet Lake chips, now it seems Intel is keen to bring overclocking to more affordable options.

With previous generations of Intel chips, at least as far back as it’s worth discussing, only high-end motherboards with the top chipsets supported overclocking, and with only with K-series processors. You’ll still need a K-series processor even with Rocket Lake, we’re told, but you’ll soon be able to overclock on more affordable mid-range motherboards.

Intel Rocket Lake-S / Cypress Cove Architecture Detailed

Today, Intel released some new information on the upcoming 11th Gen Core S-series desktop processors that they will launch in Q1 2021. These 11th Gen chips bring with them a new architecture, Cypress Cove. Per Intel, this new architecture is “designed to transform hardware and software efficiency and increase performance​.” One key item that Intel confirmed today is that we can expect double-digit improvement in IPC over the 10th Gen processors.   • New Cypress Cove architecture featuring Ice Lake Core architecture and Tiger Lake Graphics architecture.
  • Double-digit percentage IPC performance improvement.3
  • Better gen-over-gen performance.

Intel Core i3-7350K

But here we are, Core i3-7350K in hand, and the ability to drive almost 5.0 GHz without too much trouble. This raises a couple of questions: just how close is it to the cheapest Core i5-7400 out of the box, which is only a few dollars more, and how close is it to the Core i7-2600K, a favorite chip among enthusiasts who have not yet upgraded.

Intel Core i9-10850K

Shortly after the 10th Generation Core platform’s initial launch, AMD too updated Ryzen with higher clocked “XT” versions of its 3600, 3800, and 3900 to better compete with the high clocks Intel was able to achieve with its Comet Lake solutions. Nearly three months later, Intel quietly introduced the solution we have in the lab today, the Core i9-10850K.

Intel Core i9-10850K

Core i9-10850K is indeed very similar, and it’s actually simpler to delineate the differences between it and the Core i9-10900K than underscore similarities. The 10850K offers 100MHz less frequency on base, boost, and TVB speeds, which come in at 3.6GHz, 5.1GHz and 5.2GHz, respectively. TVB kicks in if the cooling solution is robust enough to keep load temperature below 70°C.

Intel’s Bonini: Rocket Lake is Coming

Intel’s John Bonini penned a blog today, “Intel’s Commitment to Gaming, and a Sneak Peek at Intel Technology to Come”. One interesting tidbit, clearly dropped due to the AMD Zen 3 event tomorrow, is on Rocket Lake:

Our 10th Gen Intel Core processors continue to provide excellent performance and a stable platform for even the most demanding games. Ultimately, I believe there’s a great 10th Gen option that addresses the needs for every type of gamer — from casual players, to the most dedicated and passionate enthusiasts.

Though as you’d expect, we’re constantly looking ahead at what’s next and how we can make our desktop CPUs even better. With that said, I’m also happy to confirm that the next generation 11th Gen Intel Core desktop processors (codenamed “Rocket Lake”) is coming in the first quarter of 2021 and will provide support for PCIe 4.0. It’ll be another fantastic processor for gaming, and we’re excited to disclose more details in the near future. There’s a lot more to come, so stay tuned!

AnandTech’s Best CPUs for Gaming: 9/20

September is the calm time before we soon hit into Zen 3 season. AMD has announced that it will hold an event on October 8th regarding the new Ryzen processors, however exactly what form this event will take (announcement? launch?) is unclear at this time. If you are ready to put some hard earned greenbacks down on one of these new processors, then perhaps come back later when we’ve tested the hardware.

Overclocking the Intel Core i9-10900K to 5.4GHz

In this article, we’ll show you how to overclock the Intel Core i9-10900K (Comet Lake) from the default speed of 3.7GHz to a whopping 5.4GHz on all 10 cores, by simply changing a few BIOS settings on the ASRock Z490 Steel Legend motherboard. And what’s even better … this was all done using just a standard AIO CPU cooler (no LN2 or dry-ice).

Intel Core i9-10850K

In many respects, the Core i9-10850K feels like a price cut that comes disguised as a new product. A scant 100 MHz of frequency separates it from the $488 Core i9-10900K, but the 10850K’s recommended price of $453 represents a 7% savings. Given the price gouging we’ve seen on the 10900K due to its spotty availability, we expect the price deltas to be even larger at retail.
