MSI MEG X299 CREATION

The MEG X299 CREATION, as its name has already given away, is another halo product; part of the MEG line with top-shelf features and performance. The X299 chipset isn’t exactly new, but still a platform to be reckoned with. Featuring the Intel 2066 socket and designed for Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X, I will be pairing it up with a Core i9-7980XE for this review.

ASUS PRIME X299-DELUXE II

Motherboard manufacturers are introducing refined X299 boards in the wake of Intel’s Basin Falls platform refresh, and Asus’ Prime X299-Deluxe II promises to fix some of the teething pains of its predecessor. We paired this board up with the Core i9-9980XE to see whether it’s up to the job of hosting Intel’s highest-end desktop chip yet.

GIGABYTE X299 DESIGNARE EX

Others can’t handle Intel’s highest-end Skylake-X chips without a fan directly on their VRM heatsinks to prevent overheating, even when chips aren’t overclocked. In short, X299 has fallen a bit short of the expectations we hold for high-end desktop platforms, especially when compared to the stability and reliability we’ve seen from AMD’s X399 boards.

They’re packed an X299 socket into a mini-ITX motherboard, and they certainly didn’t stop there either. With Intel Optane support, triple M.2, dual-band AC WiFi, dual Gigabit Intel LAN, dual USB 3.1 Gen2, Super Alloy Components, four SODIMM slots, and more… yes, all that on a mini-ITX board with a huge CPU socket. It’s beyond belief, but they did it, so let’s get testing!

EVGA X299 Dark

It’s extremely over-engineered in regards to circuits and injects features and quality when they aren’t really required. Both the right and left edges of the PCB are plated with gold as are some exposed pathways on the PCB, and it’s very hard to bend the PCB because of it.
