The MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus is not only the cheapest motherboard in the series, but also the cheapest ATX gaming motherboard from the manufacturer. Since it is actually identical to the MSI B550-A PRO, you can ask yourself the question “What makes a gaming mainboard anyway?”. If you look at the differences between the two boards, a mainboard is only suitable for gaming if it has a cool look or lighting.

It’s clear that ASRock is the partner manufacturer of the N7 B550; upon entering the BIOS for the first time, you’re presented with a re-skinned ASRock BIOS. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. ASRock’s AM4 BIOS’ might not include every option under the sun, but it means the N7 B550 is easy to navigate. NZXT’s first motherboards came with a barely functional BIOS, and highlighted the company’s naivety about this segment of PC hardware.

The Asus ProArt B550 Creator is, as the name implies, designed with the content creator in mind. It sports dual Thunderbolt 4 ports (still a rarity among AMD boards), DisplayPort input, dual 2.5 GbE, as well a VRM capable of supporting our Ryzen 9 5950X CPU at stock and while overclocked. While looks aren’t at the top of the list, the board’s black color and gold accents fit in with most build themes, but aren’t likely a focal point considering the lack of RGB lighting.

It comes with 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 Slot for graphics card, 2 x PCIe 3.0 x16 Slots, 1 x PCIe 3.0 x1 Slot, as well as 1 x M.2 Key-E for WiFi. For storage, there’s a total of 6 x SATA ports, 1 x Hyper M.2 (PCIe Gen4 x4), 1 x Ultra M.2 (PCIe Gen3 x4 & SATA3) for SSDs. And for connectivity, you get 3 x USB 3.2 Gen2 (Front Type-C, Rear Type-A+C), 10 x USB 3.2 Gen1 (4 Front, 6 Rear), 8 x USB 2.0 (6 Front, 2 Rear), and finally the Killer E3100X 2.5GB LAN.
Of course, not to mention ASRock’s unique features which includes the 10 Phase, Digi Power, Dr. MOS, and of course, the 7.1 CH HD Nahimic Audio, as well as ASRock’s PolyChrome Sync.

Digging down into the features, the board has 10 Phase digital power with Dr. MOS MOSFETs. There are two M.2 sockets (one with a heatsink) and six SATA ports — what many would call standard for budget motherboards. Memory support is listed over DDR4 5000, but of course, your memory mileage may vary. On the networking side, the PG Riptide includes a Killer Networks 2.5 GbE, but does not have integrated Wi-Fi (there’s an available M.2 socket to add it). If you need many rear USB ports, there are 10 to choose from, including a 10 Gbps Type-C port, but there is no 20 Gbps port/header.

The ASUS ProArt B550-CREATOR features a robust VRM cooling solution and a 12+2 power stage design utilizing 50 A stages from Vishay Semiconductor. The MSI MEG B550 Unify is the manufacturer’s most expensive B550 motherboard, which is also reflected in many points and functions. One can name here the power supply, the layout, the network connection, the audio solution and much more. That the rather discreet board is also suitable for overclockers is shown by the sibling model Unify-X, which only has two RAM banks and is also supposed to run particularly high memory speeds. However, the present sample should first be examined more closely.

ASRock uses a 10-phase power supply (8 CPU, 2 SOC). The electrical topology is similar to what we see on other relatively budget ASRock boards insofar as UPI doublers and PWM controller are allied to Vishay 50A MOSFETs. The B550M Steel Legend is closest in terms of specification. Get past these numbers and know that the power-delivery system pushes a maximum 400A for the CPU, which is plenty enough to generate 500W – or at least 2x anything we see from even a heavily overclocked Ryzen 9 5950X.

For specifications, the Unify is set up quite well with a 14+2 power design, MSI using Infineon stages this time around each able to handle 90A output current, plenty for the latest Zen 3 series. Of course, AM4 is the socket, and B550 is our chipset, so we have support for DDR4; 2133MHz JEDEC through 5100MHz via DOCP. Max memory is rated at 128GB across four slots.
