ASRock added a secondary super IO controller just to increase the number of fan headers on their motherboard. They went from a standard five headers on their boards to a whopping eight, and seven of those eight support up to 2A. With so many people now using triple rads in their builds, they need more fan support than ever to cool that radiator that cools the toasty 9900K.

The ASRock Fatal1ty X399 Professional Gaming motherboard (priced around $390) performs just as well as the company’s X399 Taichi, but has the added benefit of the 10Gb network controller. This board has some deficiencies from a gamer’s perspective, but would work well for a system that calls for 10Gb throughput and utilization of all the PCIe slots (something most boards can’t handle).

The ASRock Extreme4 comes well equipped, featuring a Digital PWM and 12 Power Phase design. This bodes well for overclocking performance on our i9-9900K. It’ll support multi-GPU configurations, and super fast M.2 storage or Optane for a competitive system build. Those who want even more storage options, you’ll be happy to see 8 SATA3 ports, and plentiful USB Gen 1 and Gen 2 connections.

So, in the spotlight today we have the ASRock Z390 Extreme4. As we come to expect from the Extreme4, this is a mid-range motherboards carrying a good blend of features and performance. Placing itself halfway between the feature sets and the prices of our two previously-reviewed Z390 boards, the $239 Z390 Taichi currently lives in a zone where its combination of dual Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi could make it the value choice. Unfortunately, the early firmware holds it back just enough that we’re not ready to give it an award.
