AMD launched its Threadripper CPUs for high-end desktops. But, at the last minute, it also turned heads with a cheaper Ryzen Threadripper 1900X, an 8C/16T model that drops into X399-based motherboards. The ASUS Crosshair VI Hero board features a black PCB with a plastic armor overlay covering the board’s rear panel and audio subsystem components. The X370 chipset launched many months ago, and recently we have seen the launch of second wave X370 motherboards. The one we have here today is the Crosshair VI Extreme, which is ASUS’s top of the line X370 motherboard. Many had thought that the Crosshair VI Hero was going to be ASUS’s topmost X370 motherboard, but it seems that ASUS has moved the ante up a bit and released an even more loaded X370 motherboard.

The motherboard that we are going to be reviewing today is the MSI B350 Tomahawk, which happens to be one of the most popular B350 models at the moment. AMD’s Threadripper 1920X offers a great price point for a beefy 12 cores and 24 threads, and while you lose four cores compared to the high end Threadripper 1950X, it comes at a $200 savings. Appreciating the high-level similarity between chipsets – massive socket, eight DIMM slots, heaps of M.2 and storage in general – there is little reason to reinvent the wheel. In fact, we’re comfortable in saying that Aorus takes the same floor plan for this TR4 board, but that’s no bad thing.
