MSI X470 GAMING PLUS

We’ve seen a steep increase in ‘gaming’ branded motherboards over the last half a decade and the one on our test bench today is at the forefront of the ‘gaming’ mantra. The MSI X470 Gaming Plus is a mid-range gaming themed motherboard which as it currently stands (at the time of writing) is the cheapest full-sized ATX X470 entry-level option at a cost of $120.

MSI B450 TOMAHAWK

The MSI B450 Tomahawk is actually a very impressive motherboard for a motherboard that comes in just under $100. It has a very color neutral aesthetic, which adds a lot of value in this price segment. The large VRM heat sink seems to be quite effective of trying to lower the VRM temperature while covering up part of the rear IO panel.

ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate

The X470 Taichi gets a new look in its Ultimate edition’s grey accent panels, but the “Ultimate” component comes in the form of Aquantia’s AQC107 10Gb Ethernet controller. The controller is typically priced at $100 when mounted to a PCIe x4 card, but ASRock was able to reduce the premium to a mere $60 by integrating it.

GIGABYTE X399 AORUS XTREME

Gigabyte has included a total of three Ethernet ports, which consists of two Intel Gigabit and one Aquantia 10 Gigabit. To our mind 10Gbit is an expensive luxury for gamers however a number of our YouTube audience are absolutely in love with this feature. ASUS ROG STRIX B450-I GAMING

In particular AMD’s B450 chipset offers high-performance mini-ITX computing at a reasonable price point and sacrifices very little compared to the more costly AMD X470 chipset. As such motherboard vendors can build high-spec mini-ITX motherboards at competitive price points, the ASUS attempt of which is the ROG Strix B450-I Gaming.
