The Gaming X TRIO is one hefty card and the longest graphics card I have ever used, clocking in at 12.7 inches (323mm). It beats out the EVGA RTX 2080 TI FTW3 and PowerColor RX VEGA 64 Red Devil, which are both monster-sized already. Most PCB sag usually happens around the power connectors and it seems to be a topic among comments on forums. While the video card does have a stiff backplate, it still has a slight decline at the rear. MSI has thought of this and included a support bracket.

MSI’s Gaming X Trio has always been a premium offering, and that is certainly the case with this RTX 3080 model, as it is priced almost £110 more than the RTX 3080’s £649 MSRP. For that extra cash, MSI promises increased performance, lower noise levels and lower temperatures, while also offering plentiful RGB lighting for those looking for some bling.

This is one of the few custom-design cards we have with us in this review that sticks to the standard full height. The Gaming Pro OC board design involves a chunky triple-slot, triple-fan cooling solution with copious amounts of metal and minimal use of RGB bling.

Asus duly obliges the bigger-is-better crowd with a package that’s 300mm long, 127mm wide and 52mm thick. That’s big, but its Strix brother is 20mm longer, 13mm wider and 5mm thicker. Asus says Gaming TUF OC is a 2.7-slot card, but you can ignore that and assume the hulking cooler obscures three slots.

The thermal design, dubbed ‘Tri Frozr 2,’ incorporates a trio of Torx Fan 4.0 blowers promising a 21 per cent increase in static pressure, as well as a full-length heatsink interspersed with a series of a thick heatpipes. Ideal for taming the 320W underlying GPU and MSI doesn’t skimp on the finer details.

Tastes vary, but I have to say, the new industrial design from NVIDIA for the RTX 3080 Founders Edition is as good as any consumer computer product I’ve ever seen. It’s a solid, futuristic design that weighs in at a solid 3.0 lbs. You may not agree, but I think an in-person demo might convince you.
