ASROCK B550 TAICHI RAZER EDITION

The ASRock B550 Taichi Razer Edition is arguably right at the top of the B550 tree. Whether a B550 board costing as much as the Taichi Razer Edition is right for you may come down to how important RGB is to you and how many M.2 drives you plan to run. Many X570 boards are available at this price with three M.2 slots and feature more PCIe 4.0 general purpose lanes. There is an ASRock X570 Taichi Razer Edition, and that is some $100 more. Is it worth the extra? We’d say probably not unless your needs are specific.

GIGABYTE B550M AORUS PRO

While AMD has done a great job of maintaining motherboard compatibility with new generation processors, none of the previous-generation AM4 motherboards featured official PCIe 4.0 support, not even from the storage and PCIe controlled by PCIe 4.0 compatible CPUs. Enter B550, the more value-oriented little brother of X570. While the B550 chipset is PCIe 3.0 only, B550 motherboards support PCIe 4.0 from the CPU to the primary PCIe slot as well as the primary M.2 slot (dependent on a PCIe 4.0 ready CPU).

ASRock B550 Steel Legend

The B550 Steel Legend is a great entry-level board for consumers wanting to start a budget ATX build. As for features, it offers PCIe 4.0 for graphics and a single NVMe solution, but that’s all most gamers will need to get started.

Adding to this, even with this solution being designed for the entry-level, ASRock includes a rather good VRM design and 2.5Gbe support complete with DragonLAN software support from Realtek and motherboard tuning A-Tuning software.

MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK

MSI opted to color the MAG B550 Tomahawk in a mixture of black and gray. Black is the more prominent color, but there’s a good amount of gray that adds contrast and keeps the board from looking too dull. MSI also put some RGB LEDs around the chipset heatsink that add some much-needed color to the board when it’s powered up.

ASRock B550 Extreme4

ASRock B550 Extreme4 is a decent motherboard that supports the latest AMD desktop CPUs with a good list of features that lean towards the enthusiast who appreciates on-board Power and Reset buttons and a POST code debug display.

You can do an easy reality check by asking yourself whether seven PWM fan headers sound like a decent number or some sort of crazy overkill. As a hint, we reckon four or five headers is about right however it never hurts to have a few extra as spares.

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-XE GAMING WIFI

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-XE Gaming WiFi is the ROG STRIX series motherboard, which was released specifically for the new AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors. It may seem to some that the difference in the name by only one letter does not make a new product out of the board, but in this case everything is somewhat different. Yes, the design of the ROG STRIX B550-XE Gaming and ROG STRIX B550-E Gaming is similar, but this is just not the first glance. Model XE received a new design of the cooling system (and even now it is active), a completely different set of power elements in the power subsystem, as well as something really eye-catching in the package.

ASRock B550 Taichi Razer Edition

The Taichi Razer Edition uses the same 16-phase (14+2) setup using 50A DrMOS MOSFETs found in the original Taichi. While it is not the most robust we’ve seen, this configuration easily handled our flagship Ryzen 9 5950X at stock speeds and while overclocked. ASRock also replaced the Intel-based networking with Killer Network’s 2.5 GbE E3100X LAN and Killer AX1650x Wi-Fi 6 solutions. This move can be a polarizing one as Killer Network has its fans and detractors.
