By now, a few of you are wondering why the non-Wi-Fi board simply didn’t reclaim the two PCIe lanes previously dedicated to the Wi-Fi board’s 802.11ac controller. The only answer we have is that the unchanged PCB layout likely leaves those two resources as a pathway to nowhere.

In this review we will focus on the X299 Extreme4 motherboard which is designed for the Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X processors. MSI goes in heavy on the overclocking front, evidenced by the dual 8-pin EPS on the right-hand side. The board works just fine with one, but if you’re overclocking to the limit and have a compatible PSU, there’s no harm in adding a second, and OC potential ought to be helped on by the beefy, 14-phase supply.
