..:: Introduction ::..
It’s been quite some time since we last took a good look at one of Samsung’s latest hard drive models, and our last visit with one went quite well. Samsung has never been known to be first out of the gates with products based off of cutting edge technology, although their hard drives perform nicely, and are well know for their quiet operation. Samsung’s latest product line, the SpinPoint P Series, brings Samsung offerings into the world of Serial ATA, while still offering backwards compatibility with ATA/133 specifications. These new P Series drives also feature Fluid Bearing Motor Technology, which will only further compliment the already quiet operation of the drives. Currently, Samsung is only offering the 160.0GB SATA and ATA/133 drives, however in the near future we will see a new, 240.0GB offering making headway into the market. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the 80GB / Platter, 8MB Cache Buffer, 7200RPM, ATA/133 SP1614N drive to see just how well it compares against our 7200RPM, 8MB Cache Buffer, 120.0GB Seagate Serial ATA V drive.

Aside from the rather large and obtrusive sticker that is on our test unit, used for Samsung’s own internal purposes, our drive looks identical to all other Samsung drives we have seen in the past. As we can see marked on the label, our review sample is from the first batch of drives, Rev. A. As with all PATA devices, the connections are all on the rear of the unit, along with the jumpers for use with the drive settings. The only difference that you would notice between the PATA and SATA versions of this drive deal with the chips located on the bottom PCB of the drive. Here, you would find an additional Parallel to Serial ATA bridge chip if you were to purchase the SATA version, the SP1614C.
