  • ..:: Review Notes ::..

         Before I delve too deeply into the benchmarking results, I feel I should explain how these modules were tested. The board that’s being utilized can run the modules at all four test frequencies without having an effect on the processor speed, or the front side bus speed. This means that the results you’re going to see are based upon changing the effective frequency of the RAM only. Result plots are also not zero scaled to show the slight difference between the various modules.

    ..:: SiSoft SANDRA XIb ::..

         Starting things off in today’s benchmarks we have SiSoft SANDRA. The Vista Upgrade modules were tested at three operating frequencies, as you’ve likely figured out from the graph. It’s clear that the overall bandwidth sees incremental gains with the increased RAM frequency as one would expect. The Patriot and Super Talent DDR2 modules were tested with their default SPD timings at each frequency, typically 5-5-5-15. The OCZ Vista Upgrade modules featured faster timings at lower frequencies, hence the bandwidth boost we see until we hit 800MHz when both the Super Talent and OCZ modules are operating with the same timings of 5-5-5-15.

    ..:: ScienceMark Membench ::..

         Membench typically reports similar results to those found with SANDRA, however the bandwidth numbers are often smaller and more compacted over a range of given frequencies. This is indeed the case with the results for the OCZ Vista Upgrade modules. Again, as we boost the operating frequency, there are solid gains in bandwidth. We also see the Vista Upgrade modules posting much better bandwidth numbers in the lower frequencies due to the tighter timings. Once we hit 800MHz the OCZ and Super Talent modules are giving virtually identical scores.

         Upon examination of the latency results in Membench for a 512KB block, we see that the Patriot and Super Talent 1GB kits see significantly higher latencies across the board, whereas the OCZ Vista Upgrade 2GB kit has much lower and more stable latencies. The 1GB modules see much larger improvements in latency as they move up the frequency scale, but they cannot catch the larger 2GB OCZ Vista Upgrade kit’s performance.
