I'm sure there's more than one of you out there reading this wondering one thing, what does a computer hardware review website have to do with helping out a Children's Hospital. My response to all of you wondering this is quite simple; it has everything to do with it. In the world of reviewing hardware, it's no big secret that editors like me can hoard hardware that has been donated by manufacturers for reviews. Where does this hardware go? Well, some give it away to help bring traffic to their site to continue the cycle, and others, myself included, prefer to add a little twist to things.
Since the day I decided to begin developing MBReview.com, an anniversary which will reach the “big three” in the coming months, I've always had one goal that I’ve known will never be fully achieved. That one goal is quite simple, to turn this site which has helped me so much into a machine that can be used to help others. Sure, I’m proud that MBReview has been helping guide consumers for nearly three years now, and yeah it’s wonderful that this site has been seen in nearly every country, who wouldn’t at a ripe old age of 20? But, those stats mean nothing in comparison to the ultimate goal of the site, helping others, a goal that I will never deem finished. It’s taken me three years to be able to organize a benefit like this, and it’s been a long time coming. If you’re still unsure where I stand on this issue on a personal level, let us recollect on a several simple, yet powerful quotes…
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi
"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." - Aesop
"I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do." - Helen Keller

All of the proceeds from these electronic silent auctions will go to the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. This is going to be a constant effort to raise funds that will be spent on funding for a new hospital, supporting children's initiatives such as art supplies and books, and purchasing gas and food gift cards for patient families. For those of you whom might be unfamiliar with Mott, it is rated as the number five Children's Hospital in the United States. Here's some more information about Mott Children's Hospital directly from the source.
Today, as in 1921, we strive to deliver preeminent care to each individual child while at the same time advancing the health of children everywhere. Our patients benefit from the conscientious attention of some of the finest residents and medical students in the country. Our residents and students benefit from an environment that maximizes the utilization of "classical" pediatric knowledge while constantly incorporating new evidence based medicine techniques and research discoveries.
The hospital's excellence extends far beyond medical care. Mott pioneered the nation's first Child Life program. Started in 1922, Child Life was developed to organize educational and recreational activities to enhance patients' stays in the hospital. Today, it is widely recognized as one of the best programs in the nation.
Through Child Life, children can keep up with their schoolwork while in the hospital, and they and their parents and siblings can take advantage of dozens of programs. More than 350 volunteers help make patients' time at Mott more pleasant, and staff often organize camps, excursions and reunions for current and former patients.
Because Mott is part of the University of Michigan Health System, education and research are a priority. U-M medical students learn from some of the best pediatric physicians in the nation, while residents and fellows get advanced training in general pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine and many subspecialties in inpatient and outpatient areas across UMHS.
Patients, meanwhile, benefit from the latest techniques and therapies through clinical trials conducted at Mott, including the results of clinical and basic laboratory research by U-M scientists. In all, more than $12 million in research funding from government and private sources supported pediatric research at Mott in fiscal year 2000.
